Call for more agency worker legal rights
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has released the results of a survey of temporary workers showing that they have experienced widespread discrimination and a lack of rights.

Such employees expressed concern about a number of areas in which they were at a disadvantage compared with those in a permanent job, including inferior redundancy packages (noted by 75 per cent), less maternity pay in 70 per cent of cases and 46 per cent said they had lower holiday entitlement.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber observed: "The survey shows that many employers are using the lack of employment rights and insecurity of agency workers to treat staff badly."

He called for the government to ensure these are stamped out when it implements the European Temporary Agency Worker Directive.

Temps in the capital who feel they are being treated unfairly and possibly unlawfully may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London about the matter.

Earlier this week the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) revealed that in 2008-9 the number of work-related cases it dealt with rose over a number of issues.

These included an increase in unfair dismissal cases from 33,352 in 2007-08 to 43028.
