21/10/2009 Call for private sector to match public on discrimination |
|
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on the private sector to be as good as the public sector in eliminating recruitment discrimination. A study by the for Work and Pensions found by sending three different applications for each of 987 different advertised jobs, those with names that implied an ethnic minority background were less likely to get a positive response from private firms. However, no difference was seen in the recruitment patterns of public sector bodies. Commenting on this, TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said the situation was "shocking" and stated the private sector had to get better at employing on ability and not on racial grounds. He added: "Fair employment practices have become standard in the public sector, it's about time the private sector followed suit." Those living in the capital who have a discrimination case of this kind may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London. Examples of discrimination and under-representation of ethnic minorities in Britain include just one in 15 people at management level being from such a group, Race for Opportunity reported earlier this year.
