26/11/2008 Darling to offer 'help to redundant workers' |
|
Alistair Darling has launched a new initiative to help those made redundant.
In his pre-Budget report, Mr Darling is introducing measures to help retrain workers that are facing the prospect of redundancy and those who have lost their jobs.
With the majority of firms making redundancies to cut costs, the process often adds to the financial weight on a business as they are required by law to make statutory redundancy payments, which could cause them to become insolvent, the Mail reports.
In conjunction with some of the UK's largest employers - such as Tesco and the Post Office - the government's National Employment Partnerships scheme will help people who have been made redundant to take up the 500,000 unfilled vacancies that exist around the UK.
"I am determined to do what I can to ease these concerns and to help those who are made redundant move quickly into a new job," Mr Darling said in his speech. |
