|
A new survey has found that less than one in three employees would talk to their boss about stress.
The study by Aon Consulting revealed that workers would talk to their GP, friends and family or another colleague before knocking on the boss' door.
Furthermore, stressed workers are also shunning employee hotlines and company doctors or nurses, it was found.
Alex Bennett, head of healthcare consulting at Aon Consulting, said he was amazed that, despite increasing stress and pressure during the recession, workers are not seeking the advice of people who can help.
He adds that stress is not easily recognisable so employers need to do "all they can to look for the signs of stress".
This includes "examining sickness absence data and accessing the clinical resources and professionals at their disposal to ensure that employees are given the necessary support to prevent stress leading to long term absence".
More than half a million people report that they have experienced stress at a level that has actually made them ill, according to the Health and Safety Executive, while each case of ill health leads to an average of 29 working days lost.
