29/10/2009 Employees 'should do more to promote worker rights' |
|
The majority of UK workers are not fully aware of their employment rights and human resources (HR) departments should help with this, it has been argued. A recent report by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) revealed that 22 per cent of employees felt they did not know their rights and associate director of the Work Foundation Stephen Overell told Personnel Today that HR can change this. He observed: "Arguably, HR professionals are a bit squeamish about raising awareness around rights because they sense, not unreasonably, that the more people know, the more they are likely to use those rights." However, he argued, doing this would be better than trying to implement a large number of "policies and procedures" to cover all possible scenarios. Those living in the capital who may have an issue with their rights at work might wish to speak to employment lawyers in London. According to the BERR survey, around 34 per cent of those polled had encountered a problem with their rights at work, with 29 per cent having had to deal with employment rights issues in the last five years.
