24/07/2008 Employers asked to help 'national movement' to tackle obesity |
|
The health secretary has called on employers to help to tackle the problem of obesity on in the UK and has said that companies could become part of a "national movement" to help tackle the problem. Alan Johnson has suggested that people need help and support to encourage them to change their behaviour. Speaking at think tank, the Fabian Society, Johnson said: "Just as the government has a moral duty to tackle poverty and exclusion, so it also has a duty to address obesity." He continued: "Tackling obesity requires a much broader partnership, not only with families but with employers, retailers, the leisure industry, the media, local government and the voluntary sector." Johnson's comments follow a report by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence which aimed to give employers guidance on how to encourage their employees to increase their levels of physical activity. The campaign called on companies to develop a company-wide plan or policy to encourage and support staff to be physically active and then to monitor their progress. |
