08/05/2009 Employers 'need not worry' about minimum wage change |
|
Businesses have been urged to look beyond short-term problems they may face as a result of new minimum wage rules and consider the interest of the economy and staff.
The government has revealed that employees will no longer be able to use tips to make up the minimum wage - which currently stands at £5.73 per hour for adult workers.
And Carolyn Jones, director of the Institute for Employment Rights, suggested that companies complaining about potential negative effects "have cried wolf too often".
"The employers are whining as usual, that any kind of regulation will lead to job loss and closures," she observed, arguing that the implications of attempting to cut "what is already a low minimum wage" are more concerning.
Workers who are concerned they are not receiving the full amount they are entitled to may wish to seek legal advice, particularly after the new rules come into effect in October of this year.
