Changes to employment law designed to give more rights to agency staff who have been working for more than 12 weeks may not be completely effective, one trade union official has warned.
Kathleen Walker Shaw, EU officer at GMB, suggested the new legislation - which will come in under the EU directive on agency workers and must be in force by December 2011 - has the potential to benefit a lot of people, but the government needs to ensure it is introduced properly so that it works.
"What we are saying to the government is although these are improvements, depending on how they are implemented they could be open to abuse and avoidance from employers," she remarked.
Businesses that do not comply with the new rules will likely face an employment tribunal, Ms Walker Shaw said. She added that this is the course of action her organisation would like to be taken.
