Employment law experts have warned that there could be legal implications for businesses as a result of the swine flu pandemic.
The Guardian quoted Caroline Doran and Stephen Robinson, who specialise in the sector, as suggesting workplace litigation cases could increase in the coming months because of the outbreak.
"If employers don't take some steps to consider what will happen if someone is affected, there are a myriad of health and safety and duty of care regulations that would come into play," Ms Doran said.
Another employment lawyer, Claire Dawson, told the publication that if a member of staff is pregnant, for example, then bosses would have a duty to ensure that sufficient protection is put in place to protect the woman and her baby.
Expectant mothers have been cited as one of the most at-risk groups from swine flu.
Last week, BBC News reported US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data in The Lancet that suggested this demographic is four times more likely to need hospital treatment for the illness than average.
