04/11/2009 Employment rights of disabled being breached, says poll |
|
Over a third of workers with a disability are being bullied at work, according to a new poll.
The study by trade union Unison found that 35 per cent of employees with a disability have experienced bullying in the past six months, with 22 per cent stating that this is continuing.
Responding to the findings, Unison general secretary Dave Prentis commented: "These figures amount to a huge number of staff suffering in silence at the hands of bullies, while employers turn their back on the issue."
He noted that victims of workplace bullying can endure serious mental and physical health problems as a result.
Those suffering bullying at work without getting any redress from their bosses may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London about their options.
A recent pre-hearing review prior to an unfair dismissal case in Nottinghamshire saw costs awarded against a school that sacked its librarian, for wrongly disputing that she had a disability.
The judge ruled West Bridgford School was wrong to contest the medically-established fact that Jacqueline Crockford suffers from mixed nervous anxiety, the Nottingham Post reported.
