02/10/2009 Employment tribunal claims up |
|
The number of claims being taken to employment tribunals has risen, new figures have revealed.
Annual statistics from the Tribunal Service covering the year to March 31st 2009 show that in this period there were 63,000 individual claims, up 15 per cent from the 2007-08 total.
While the number of cases relating to issues such as the working time directive and equal pay were down, there was a 48 per cent increase in redundancy pay disputes and a 29 per cent rise in unfair dismissal cases.
The number of instances of consultation not being carried out before redundancies were imposed was 2.5 times as high as in 2007-08.
People living in the capital and affected by such matters may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London.
The rise in redundancy and dismissal issues has come at a time when the recession has led to employers shedding large numbers of jobs.
Government figures showed that in the three months to July there were 246,000 redundancies in the UK, although this was 55,000 less than in the first quarter.
