26/06/2009 Equal pay law win for men |
|
Thousands of men could be able to make equal pay claims after a test case brought against three English local authorities by 300 low-paid workers. A trio of authorities were ruled to have discriminated on the grounds of gender after a deal on back pay saw female employees granted a higher sum. The men were working in roles such as cleaners, care workers and playground attendants. Such a win could enable as many as 12,000 men to make similar claims elsewhere, which could include a number in London. Those working in the capital who feel they may have an equal pay claim can contact employment lawyers in London. One case of equal pay being agreed in the capital was the decision two years ago to offer equal prize money to both sexes at Wimbledon, which is currently under way. The move brought the championships in line with other major tournaments around the world. Written by Anthony Dyson
