23/07/2008 Equality Bill details outlined |
|
A Discrimination Law Review consultation has pushed the government to give clarification on the bill.
The bill has been designed to "create a new Equality Duty on public bodies, end age discrimination, require transparency, extend positive action, strengthen enforcement and simplify the law".
In addition the Bill, which was announced by Harriet Harman last month, will strengthen the law for transsexuals, pregnant women and new mothers, disabled people and members of private clubs.
A number of areas that will not be covered by the bill have also been announced and include details that the law will not extend to protection against harassment outside work on the basis of sexual orientation or religion or belief.
Specific protection will not be given for those that are discriminated against because they speak Welsh or against caste discrimination.
Equality Minister, Harriet Harman, said that she hoped the bill would create a "radical shift" to fight unfairness and "breathe new life" into equality measures. |
