06/11/2008 Fair Employment Enforcement Board to protect vulnerable employees |
|
The first meeting of the Fair Employment Enforcement Board took place today, whose objective is to protect vulnerable workers from unscrupulous employees.
Government enforcement bodies, unions, business leaders, and Citizens Advice are all on the board and will work to ensure effective enforcement of the law.
Employment relations minister Pat McFadden explained that although workers have better rights than ever before, there are still some 'unacceptable cases' of rogue employers exploiting their staff.
Mr McFadden said: "We must safeguard workers' rights and ensure unscrupulous employers cannot prey on those who are desperate to earn a living in difficult times."
He said that denying workers basic rights is not only illegal, it is unfair on the majority of businesses which are honest.
The board will oversee the launch of a workers hotline and will look to raise employees' awareness of basic rights.
Establishing a Fair Employment Enforcement Board was one of the recommendations made in the final report of the Vulnerable Worker Enforcement Forum. |
