12/01/2010 Firm faces discrimination claims over redundancies |
|
Fujitsu is facing claims that its redundancy policy has deliberately targeted people from minority groups.
Trade union Unite has suggested that women, part-time workers and those from ethnic minorities are disproportionately represented among those set to lose their jobs at the IT firm.
It stated that there were "major discrepancies" in the scoring system used to decide who stayed and who went at the firm, which employs Britons in sites across the UK, including London.
This led to those from minorities being "disproportionately scored lower than their male, full-time and white colleagues across the four selection criteria used to select people for compulsory redundancy", the union argued.
Fujitsu insisted that its procedures are not carried out on a discriminatory basis.
Those who believe they may have a case for discrimination may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London.
Age discrimination is another area where there needs to be new legislation to protect against discriminatory practices, the Financial Times argued recently.
