26/08/2008 Fraud case 'highlights need to employ anti-theft measures' |
|
The case of a manager who stole over £8,000 from his employer illustrates the need to employ anti-theft measures, Workplace Law Network has reported.
Ipswich crown court heard how Tony Cowles took money from Costa Coffee in Newmarket after snapping due to work pressure.
Mr Cowles attempted to flee the country and got as far as New Zealand but was refused entry and arrested when he returned to the UK. He was subsequently jailed for a year.
Workplace Law Network notes that 80 per cent of the £40 million that is lost in fraud each day in the UK involves an employee.
The website quotes statistics that show that 90 per cent of employees who commit fraud do so after working for a company for over a year.
A white paper, produced by Workplace Law Network, explains the potential damage caused by fraudulent employees: "It is important to appreciate that if an employee steals from his or her employer that it is both a criminal act and a breach of the employment contract." |
