03/09/2008 Gangmasters that "abuse the system" have licences revoked |
|
Over 20 gangmasters have had their licences revoked after a crackdown on those who are "abusing the system and their workers", Workplace Law Network reports. Operation Ajax has been set up by the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) in the hope that it will send a "resounding message" to unscrupulous labour providers. GLA chairman Paul Whitehouse said that the figures speak for themselves and show that they meant what they said when they launched the program to "clamp down" on those "abusing the system and their workers" and find and punish them. There were only 15 licence revocations in the whole of the last financial year. If the number of revocations continues at the same rate there will have been 80 licences taken away by the end of this financial year. Licences are held by 1,186 labour providers currently in the UK in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, shellfish-gathering and food and drink processing and packaging. |
