20/02/2009 Guidance released on lawful redundancy strategies |
|
Acas and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have jointly launched guidance for employers on how to cope with the recession.
Included in the advices is an underlining of the importance of formulating redundancy strategies to enable them to manage the issue "sensitively and within the law".
Titled Managing in the Recession, the guidance has been released following statistics that show over a third (35 per cent) of calls to the Acas helpline last month were from people asking about redundancies, lay offs and business transfers.
John Taylor, Acas chief executive, says: "Many of those organisations that were quick to lay off people in the last recession struggled to meet renewed business demand when the economy picked up.
Consequently, he says that one of the biggest challenges employers face is to engage the workforce for today's challenges and prepare the organisation for "the opportunities tomorrow brings".
Meanwhile, the Trades Union Congress has called for an increase in the amount of an employees' weekly earnings which counts towards statutory redundancy from £350 to £500. |
