15/01/2009 Harman proposes new law to 'end class division' |
|
Equalities minister Harriet Harman is behind new legislation proposed this week that will aim to end the class divide in the UK. Public bodies - such as councils and universities - will reportedly be required to tackle inequality by taking into consideration a person's class background when hiring employees, promoting individuals and providing services. According to the Evening Standard, the legal requirement for such bodies to consider such inequality is likely to be tacked onto the Equalities Bill. In a speech to be given on Saturday, Ms Harman will say it is the government's task to play its part in creating a new social order with "fairness and equality at its heart". "We want to do more than just provide escape routes out of poverty for a talented few. We want to tackle the class divide," she will say. Meanwhile, the Tories suggested that Ms Harman was "playing to the left-wing gallery".
