The president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has warned of the dangers that face companies with substandard health and safety practices. With the new Health and Safety (Offences) Act coming into force this week (January 16th), Nattasha Freeman says that it is "imperative" that organisations take their responsibilities seriously. "Companies that play at health and safety will find it tough to survive the current economic climate," she warned. Ms Freeman believes firms that do not provide a safe working environment or have inadequate health and safety practices could be hit with fines at a time when they can least afford them. She added: "One needless accident during such challenging times could also spell the end for your company." The Health and Safety (Offences) Act revises the maximum penalties applicable to certain offences relating to health and safety and makes imprisonment an option.
