25/08/2009 HR bosses told to focus on uneven pay or face court |

HR bosses who do not work to tackle problems with unequal pay could end up facing employment law issues, it has been suggested.
Lancashire County Council's HR director Carol Mills told Personnel Today it is important wage disparities are addressed, particularly in light of the large number of employees who are taking their organisations to tribunals over such matters.
"The task for HR directors is to look to identify if any pay and conditions disproportionally apply to one group of employees or another, examine the reasons why and ... to address the issue," she remarked.
Earlier this month, the Lancashire Evening News reported that 483 people are to bring Ms Mills's council before a legal hearing due to unequal pay.
A further 222 staff members are said to be in talks with the local authority over their "grievances".
So far, 9,038 workers have accepted compensation, with the case costing the council more than £16 million.
According to the Lancaster Guardian, Lancashire County Council is currently carrying out an initiative to ensure men and women are paid equally and to harmonise wages for manual and office-based workers. |
