It has been claimed that one of the primary responsibilities of human resources (HR) should be to help senior management lead by example and project confidence.
In the current economic downturn, fears over streamlining and redundancies are growing and it is up to HR to help bosses realise that their demeanour affects employees and can help spread fear, according to Performance Consultants, a provider of executive coaching.
Official figures show that the number of people unemployed has climbed by 137,000 in the three months to October and could soon hit two million.
"Senior managers can do much to either fuel or prevent the spread of fear," Neil Twogood, chief operating officer at Performance Consultants, told Personnel Today.
However, Mr Twogood claims that their actions must match their "internal feelings" or employees will see them as insincere.
He advises that bosses should try to "retain an encouraging air of sincerity, optimism and realism".
