Employers who flout the law are an endemic feature of the British economy, an expert has stated.
Spokesperson for the Employment Law Advisory Service Leon Teasdale said many people know they must do things "outside of the box" to stay in their jobs, but added that this can usually be achieved within the rules.
However, he continued: "There are other employers who don't pay the minimum wage, have convoluted governance structures and try to pay as little as possible. That will never change."
Those employed in the capital who are being subjected to illegal practices such as pay below the minimum wage level may wish to take their case up with employment lawyers in London.
Mr Teasdale advised that those who are being treated incorrectly should seget legal advice, as well as seeking redress through their company's own grievance policy.
At present, the minimum wage stands at £5.80 per hour for those aged 22 and over, with the government's own guidance on the issue noting that a contract stating that someone can be paid less cannot be legally binding.
