|
Official figures have confirmed a rise in the number of people out of work.
The Office for National Statistics revealed yesterday that the total of people classed as unemployed now stands at 2.1 million, up 177,000 over the last quarter and 486,000 in a year.
Claimant numbers have also increased, with the number on Job Seeker's Allowance up 73,700 in March to 1.46 million.
Such a situation has arisen amid an increasing number of redundancies across the country.
Some may have legal claims arising from this in cases where the correct procedures have not been followed by employers.
These could include a lack of consultation, not considering alternatives such as reduced working hours and unfair methods being used to select who to lay off.
In his Budget speech yesterday, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling announced extra help for the unemployed in a bid to create an extra 250,000 jobs.
