London borough set to make 80 redundant
Up to 80 people could be made redundant by Hounslow Council as the London borough seeks to trim its budget.

The authority has unveiled plans to axe its £686,000 annual subsidy to Hounslow Language Service, which helps children in the borough whose first language is not English to improve their linguistic skills, the Hounslow Guardian reports.

Hounslow Teachers' Association secretary Marilyn Bater remarked that this suggested a break with previous promises that frontline services would not be cut by the authority.

She stated: "If a teacher is not a frontline service I don't know what is."

Those living in the capital who may be made redundant despite an undertaking that this would not happen may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London to see if their bosses are breaking a binding agreement.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that 205,000 people in the UK were made redundant in the three months to the end of September this year.
