Almost half of employees are not compensated for any extra shifts that they put in outside of their contracted hours, it has emerged.
A new survey found that 16 per cent of organisations have no scheme to provide extra money nor do they praise employees that stay late.
The poll by communications firm T-Mobile also revealed that 59 per cent of employers do not consider burning the midnight oil as an indication of how hard they worked.
Ollie Chivers, head of business marketing at T-Mobile UK, said that it is "encouraging" to see organisations understanding that their employees do not need to "spend all night in the office to be productive and do their jobs effectively".
Last week, the UK's ability to opt-out of the Working Time Directive was scrapped by the European Parliament, meaning employers in the UK will have to stick to a maximum 48-hour week.
