Minister hails equality bill
The new equality bill has been published by the minister for women and equality, Harriet Harman, who has pledged that it will help females, ethnic minorities and the disabled in the workplace.

Commenting on the bill, Ms Harman said it will also tackle issues such as the class divide.

One of the key components of the bill will be to allow positive discrimination, with Ms Harman stating: "We will let employers have the right to choose to diversify their team - with positive action."

Such legislation will create new obligations for employers and those who may feel they are discriminated could benefit from getting legal help to deal with any issues they may face in the workplace under the new law when it is introduced, or existing rules.

Some have called for more issues to be covered by the bill, with the Terence Higgins Trust saying it and similar charities believe there should be protection against discrimination by employers against job candidates with conditions such as HIV and mental illness.
