23/07/2009 MPs plan investigation into City discrimination |
|
Discrimination against women in the City of London is to be investigated by a committee of MPs.
The Treasury Select Committee will investigate various issues of sexism, including pay rates, flexibility and the number of women making it into senior management positions.
Such a move may be part of the wider review of the future of the financial sector in the wake of the credit crunch.
Committee chairman John McFall said that as pay and corporate governance are issues currently under examination as new financial regulations are being considered, "the committee feels it is important to highlight the issue of gender equality in the financial services industry".
Those working in the City who feel they may have a discrimination claim can speak to employment lawyers in London about the issue.
Age is another area of concern for many, with pensions expert Dr Ros Altmann recently commenting that there is "a lot of age discrimination" in the UK labour market.
