08/10/2008 National minimum wage parity called for |
|
An appeal is being made to the government to equalise the national minimum wage (NMW) for all age groups, Workplacelaw.net reports.
At present the NMW is different depending on which age group employees fall into.
Currently, any employee aged 22 or older is entitled to £5.73 an hour, 18 to 21 year olds must be paid a minimum of £4.77 and 16 to 17 year olds £3.53.
The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) has argued that it is important to encourage an age diverse workforce and maintain equality among employees.
Catharine Pusey, director of The Employers Forum on Age, said: "There is a consensus that it is wrong to pay a woman less than a man or to pay a black person less than a white. Why then do we think it is right to pay someone less simply because they are younger?"
According to the Public and Commercial Services union at least six government departments may need to be given an emergency pay rise to meet the new NMW introduced on October 3rd, after the union said the pay levels of some civil servants was "shamefully low".
