Workers with equal pay disputes on contracts are now able to claim on a string on these and not just the latest one, following a court ruling.
Where an unbroken succession of contracts exists, this new ruling will apply, following the appeal court case of Joyce Slack and Ors v. Cumbria county council, out-law.com reports.
The verdict added to a previous European court ruling that workers could seek redress where there had been short breaks between contracts, with Lord Justice Mummery stating that the "irresistible logic" of that decision was that "an uninterrupted succession of contracts is a
case of a stable employment relationship".
Employees affected by this change may wish to take legal advice before considering taking action over pay and conditions.
Earlier this week 12 women at Sunderland council won an test case on an equal pay claim after the authority created a 50 per cent bonus scheme that only applied to traditionally male jobs such as gardening and road sweeping.
