15/09/2009 New parental leave rules pledged |
|
New rules have been pledged by ministers that will see women able to transfer up to six months of their maternity leave to the baby's father.
The government has revealed the plans, which it would be able to get onto the statute books before a general election has to be held next June.
It means that the present two weeks of paid leave fathers can take may be replaced by three months on paid absence and three months unpaid.
Such a new law may lead to difficulties with employers unwilling to co-operate with it, which those affected and living in the capital may wish to discuss with employment lawyers in London.
This may include individuals who are currently looking to start a family, as the legislation could be passed in time to affect them. A poll by the Trades Union Congress has found that work-life balance is the most important issue for unions, with two-thirds asking for advice on matters relating to the subject.
