06/10/2009 New retirement age policy announced |
|
The Conservatives have announced a plan to raise the statutory retirement age from 65 to 66 at the party's annual conference in Manchester.
Shadow chancellor George Osborne is revealing plans today to make the change, which could interest those who would prefer to delay retirement.
This will affect men and would come into place by 2016, something the party can legislate for in the next parliament if it wins the forthcoming general election.
Labour's policy is to raise the pension age to 66 in 2024, phasing in an increase up to 68 by 2046.
Those facing work-related issues concerning age and ageism - including retirement - may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London.
A recent court challenge to the current mandatory retirement arrangements by Age Concern and Help the Aged was defeated in the High Court last week, which ruled that it was not a breach of European law to dismiss workers without redundancy pay at 65.
However, judge Mr Justice Blake said the case for raising the retirement age was "compelling".
