People wanting to work in the UK for six months or less will now have to apply for a dedicated business visa and give proof of their activities during their stay. The Home Office announced the changes to border regulations yesterday (October 16th) and said the new rules are designed to "safeguard the visitor route into the UK from abuse". Business visitors will be required to provide evidence of meetings they are attending and fact finding missions they are intending to undertake. Commenting on the strict rules, border and immigration minister Phil Woolas said: "These changes will help create a fairer Britain with fair treatment for those who play by the rules, but tough action against those who break the law. "We want the UK to stay open and attractive to both business and visitors." Criticism has been levied at the regulations and it has been claimed that the new system will hinder the economy. Stephen Alambritis, a spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: "People coming to clinch contracts should be welcomed with open arms, not be faced with strict new rules," the Telegraph reported. |
