A leading charity has suggested that older workers in the UK face discrimination when it comes to keeping their jobs in the recession. Age Concern director general Gordon Lishman says that older workers face two problems, as they are the age group "most at risk of redundancy" and once they are out of work they are faced with a tougher task than younger people to find further employment due to "ageist attitudes". "If the government wants to help avoid thousands of willing workers becoming permanently unemployed, today's employment initiative must outline specific help for older workers," he added, according to Epolitix. Mr Lishman calls for the government to immediately scrap the "pointless" mandatory retirement ages, which will allow people who want to continue working or need to, to do so. In June last year, a landmark victory in the Court of Appeal resulted in older workers being able to appeal against the decision if they have been driven out of employment due to their age, Politics.co.uk says. |
