The gap in pay between men and women is greater the higher paid the role is, it has been stated.
Such a comment was made by President of the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs Tatjana Hine, who remarked: "The glass ceiling is something that in some industries will always be there," citing the City of London as one arena where this applies.
However, she said, it will not stand in the way of all women, as some will "work their way through it" by measures such as starting their own firms.
Those who believe they could have a pay claim based on gender discrimination may take legal advice on the matter before proceeding with any action.
Figures from the Computer Economics Limited and Remuneration Economics National Management Survey 2008 revealed that the average take-home pay for a female executive last year was £32,614, compared with £46,269 for men.
