17/09/2009 Redundancy claims could rise as unemployment surges |
|
Unemployment in the UK has continued to rise, new figures have shown. Data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed that the number of unemployed rose by 210,000 in the three months to July, totalling 2.47 million, with the claimant count rising 24,400 to 1.61 million in August. In the three months to July there were 246,000 redundancies, a year-on-year rise of 107,000. Some of those being made redundant could have reason for taking action if they believe their employers have acted unfairly or not followed the rules. People living in the capital who are affected this way may speak to employment lawyers in London about their cases. Global Insight Economist Howard Archer warned of more job woes to come. He was quoted by the Independent as saying: "Unemployment still seems likely to reach three million in 2010 or early 2011 and there remains a very real danger that it could rise even further."
