The number of people seeking redundancy law advice could remain high over the course of the year, new data from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has indicated.
In the second quarter of 2009, the organisation observed little change in the large volume of enquiries about redundancy policies from HR professionals to its legal helpline, PM Online reports.
John Philpott, chief economist at the CIPD, suggested to the body's Employment Law Conference that signs of an economic recovery will not help to ease the concerns of those worried about their jobs.
"This data offers little comfort that there will be any significant let-up in the redundancy rate in the next few months," he remarked.
Last month, the Sunday Times warned that businesses "can pay a heavy price in compensation claims" if they do not comply with redundancy law and procedures when laying off workers.
It pointed to a rise in the number of unfair dismissal cases seen by the Tribunal Service in the ten months up to February.
