26/10/2009 Redundancy threats continue as economy stays in recession |
|
The threat of further redundancies in the near future may be greater than expected in London and across the UK after news emerged that the country is still in recession. Experts had expected the third quarter gross domestic product figures to indicate a return to growth, but instead the Office for National Statistics disclosed that the estimated return represented a further 0.4 per cent decline. This was the sixth successive quarter of negative growth, the first such sequence since comparable data began being collected in 1955. Some of those living in the capital who are made redundant may find that their employers fail to follow the correct procedures or act fairly when letting them go. Those affected this way could benefit from speaking to employment lawyers in London. Commenting on the continued economic contraction, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman Vince Cable said: "For all the hopes of a quick recovery, these figures make it clear we are still in the longest and what could yet become the deepest recession on record."
