20/08/2009 Redundancy uncertainty as bank reviews closures |
|
Many redundancies could be prevented by a decision by the Lloyds Banking Group to review its plans to close all Cheltenham & Gloucester C&G Building Society branches.
The part-nationalised bank has been shedding jobs and was intending to close the C&G network entirely by November.
However, this process is now up for review and Lloyds said customers of C&G should continue to use its services as normal in the meantime.
While welcoming the decision, National officer of trade union Unite Rob MacGregor criticised the uncertainty generated over the future of staff at C&G SPACES.
He said: "Today's announcement comes with no warning and will make the workforce wonder whether their bosses have any long-term strategy for the future of the bank."
Those living in the capital who are facing possible redundancy and uncertain of their options may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London.
Official government figures for Greater London show that there are now 359,000 unemployed, or 8.9 per cent of the workforce.
