03/03/2009 Report suggests 320,000 redundancies on way |
|
More than 320,000 people in the UK will lose their jobs in the next three months, it has been predicted.
The projection comes from accountancy firm BDO Stoy Hayward, based on its Employment Index figures for January and February.
Such a figure comes despite another index produced by the firm - measuring business confidence - revealing its first improvements in short and medium-term confidence in 13 months.
Partner at BDO Stoy Hayward Peter Hemington commented: "Optimism remains low and businesses expect the economy to continue to contract, but companies are now adapting their business models for an uncertain future."
However, such adaptation has involved companies becoming more confident about their future plans after implementing strategies that have seen jobs go, the firm has suggested.
One company where up to 850 job losses have been threatened is van maker LDV.
Plans are due to be unveiled today for a management buyout of the Birmingham-based company, which may limit the number of redundancies.
