According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), more than a third of all new incidents of ill health can be attributed to work-related stress.
The HSE claims that each case of stress-related absence is likely to result in the employee taking one month off work, on average.
Consequently, Helen Toll, health and safety consultant at Norwich Union Risk Services, believes that employers should formulate a clear policy on stress management and other issues that can cause stress - including workplace harassment, bullying and violence toward staff.
"Stress should be treated like any other workplace hazard. A risk assessment should be carried out, both at organisational level and within each team," she suggests.
Karl Monahan, business development manager at the On Site Massage Company, believes that it is better to try and prevent stress in the workplace, rather than attempt to cure it. |
