29/08/2008 Strike action over unequal pay between contractors and full-time employees |
|
Staff at CE Electric are to strike over unequal pay following an overwhelming vote in favour of taking action, Workplace Law reported.
An official strike ballot saw 88 per cent of GMB members agree to a four day strike on the grounds that contractors employed by the company are being paid four times the amount of full-time employees.
There are 1,100 electricity supply workers planning to take part in the four day strike.
It follows an offer made on July 16th with ACAS that was subsequently rejected by 88.5 per cent of GMB members.
Joan Anderson, GMB Organiser said, "These workers are totally underpaid in comparison with other workers in the rest of the utility industries."
She warned: "The management, at the talks in Leeds must listen to the voice of their workers and come forward with a pay plan which will deliver comparability for these workers."
Workplace Law reported that pay scales will become "more significant issue for employers, as the impending Equality Bill will contain measures to make companies more transparent". |
