28/04/2009 Strike fear over academic redundancy threat |
|
Unions are threatening to strike over the possibility of redundancies in the academic sector, with ballot papers having been sent out.
Members of the University and College Union (UCU) are being balloted over fears that hundreds could be made redundant as cuts are made to budgets amid the economic crisis.
UCU general secretary Sally Hunt was quoted by the Press Association as saying: "The pace of job cuts and restructuring is quickening across the entire higher education sector, at a time when research and high quality teaching is badly needed."
She warned that any redundancies made now could be the "first of many".
The union has said that it could carry out action falling short of a strike, such as not marking exam papers.
Those facing possible redundancy may wish to seek legal advice if they believe employers have not followed procedures correctly.
Official figures for March revealed that unemployment rose from 2.03 million to 2.1 million, or 6.7 per cent of the workforce.
