24/09/2009 Strike threat over compulsory redundancies |
|
The Guardian Media Group has been threatened with strike action over fears of redundancies.
A meeting of journalists concerned over the future of the firm's publications - particularly the Observer newspaper - noted that there has been a commitment by the group to make redundancies, but also an undertaking that these will not be compulsory.
Officials of the National Union of Journalists said this undertaking must be upheld, as there will be a strike ballot if it is not.
Those who may be facing a breach of an agreement not to make compulsory redundancies at their workplace might wish to speak to employment lawyers in London about the matter.
Some of those being made redundant will now be public sector employees as local authorities and other bodies meet the challenge of cutting costs.
Bolton council in Greater Manchester has just announced plans to axe 86 posts in its adult services division in a bid to save £1 million.
