05/05/2009 Survey finds widespread fear of redundancy |
|
Over a third of staff are working for employers who have made redundancies or are planning them, it has been revealed. A survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) found 36 per cent of respondents stating that they were working for firms in the position, leading to growing fears that they could lose their jobs. The study also found an increase in job satisfaction from the previous CIPD survey, but the body suggested this was down to many people taking the view that it was good to still be in a job during a recession. Those who are facing possible redundancy may wish to take legal advice on their position, should they believe their employer is not following the correct procedures. Some firms have been flouting the requirement to give employees being made redundant as much notice as the law states, the Daily Mail reports. A case mentioned by the paper includes technology company Nortel, whose administrators Ernst & Young did not provide the statutory level of notice when making people redundant at some of its UK sites, an issue trade union Unite is pursuing.
