25/11/2009 Tribunal payouts questioned |
|
The perceived unfairness of the size of compensation payouts has come under question, with it being argued that clear guidelines are not in place to ensure these are proportional.
Writing in the Guardian, columnist Afua Huirsch suggested that "there is no consistency in the levels of compensation awarded by tribunals".
She said that while News of the World reporter Matt Driscoll was awarded £800,000 for being hounded out of his job at the paper, this pales in comparison with the £4 million damages being sought by former Nomos Capital employee Jordan Wimmer.
Ms Wimmer is claiming sexual harassment against former boss Mark Lowe.
"No one can call for reform of the system because no one system exists," Ms Hirsch noted.
Those who are seeking compensation for a work grievance may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London to see what they may be likely to get.
Earlier this week, Ms Wimmer's tribunal heard that Mr Lowe sent a Latin message to an intern that turned out to be obscene when translated into English.
