12/08/2009 TUC call on employment legislation for older workers |
|
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has criticised proposed legislation that it says does little to help older workers get back into employment.
Expressing concern at the high rate of unemployment among over-50s and the poor prospects they face of getting back into work, the TUC said the 'work for your benefits' scheme that includes jobs training is of little use to experienced older people.
Instead, the government should take action to stop older people being forced into taking early retirement, it argued.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber suggested senior employees are being made the scapegoats for the problems of youth unemployment.
He said: "The idea of forcing older workers out of the labour market is morally offensive and would cause economic chaos."
Older employees who lose their jobs in the capital and believe they have cause for grievance may wish to consult employment lawyers in London.
UK unemployment rose by 0.9 per cent in the three months to May this year, the largest quarterly rise since 1981.
