TUC in minimum wage call
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has issued a call for a minimum wage of £6 an hour.

In its submission to the Low Pay Commission, the TUC said that it is seeking a 3.5 per cent rise to take the level up to the proposed figure on the grounds that wages are expected to rise elsewhere during the 2010-11 period the new pay award will cover.

The body argued that the move is affordable in light of the expectations of a recovery from recession and said that as two-thirds of the beneficiaries are women, the gender pay gap will be closed by such a move.

General secretary of the TUC Brendan Barber said: "An increase in the minimum wage is required to ensure that working families are not left in unnecessary poverty."

Last month, the manufacturers' organisation EEF told the Low Pay Commission that future rises in the minimum wage should be linked to wider pay trends in the economy.
