09/01/2009 TUC: Unpaid overtime increasing |
|
It has been claimed that the number of workers doing extra hours for no extra money has hit record levels.
According to the TUC, 5.234 million workers put in £26.9 billion-worth of overtime last year that they did not get paid for.
The TUC has calculated that if all workers commenced all their unpaid work at the start of the year, they would receive their first pay-packet on February 27th.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber described the figures as "disappointing".
He adds that the recession is making people scared of "losing their job in the year ahead and joining the ever-growing dole-queue".
"Inevitably people will be putting in extra hours if they think it can help protect against redundancy or keep their employer in business," Mr Barber furthered.
Meanwhile, a recent study by Employment Law Advisory Services revealed that two-thirds of bosses are spending significantly more hours in the office, which is risking their health and putting a strain on their family lives. |
