02/11/2009 TUC wage call backed |
|
A call to raise the minimum wage to £6 per hour next year by the Trades Union Congress has been supported by a pressure group. Compass, which describes its mission as campaigning for greater democracy and equality, has rejected the notion that raising the level by 20p from its current £5.80 would put firms out of business. General secretary of the body Gavin Hayes said it was "absolutely right" that such an increase should be implemented. He added: "We shouldn't just be insisting on a minimum wage, but fundamentally we need to be working towards a living wage for the entire country," noting that this has been pursued in London, as a result of the policies of former mayor Ken Livingstone. Those who are not currently being paid the minimum wage may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London as such action by employers is illegal. Last week, the TUC claimed that raising the figure would help close the gender pay gap, as two-thirds of workers on that level of pay are women. Written by Anna Norton
